Introduction Massage Therapy and Acupuncture Mr. Li Yin M.D. & B.Sc.
What is Massage TherapyMassage Therapy is the manipulation of soft tissues and joints of the body to gain a therapeutic response. It provides an alternative health option to help alleviate everyday and occupational stresses, muscular over-use and many chronic pain syndromes. A variety of different massage techniques are used including Swedish massage, Chinese massage, friction massage, etc. Massage therapists may use some other therapies, depending on your needs, including hydrotherapy (hot and cold backs, ice, etc), acupuncture and remedial and postural exercise recommendations. It is a partnership in which the therapists help the clients to understand the process behind the pain and discomfort, and work together to alleviate the problem. What Can Massage Do For You?Massage enhances the function of muscles and joints, therefore it can greatly reduce muscular and joint pain. Introduction about AcupunctureAcupuncture, a unique system of therapy and pain relief, has been in constant use throughout the Chinese-culture area for more than 2000 years. It is a complementary medical method used to encourage natural healing, reduce or relieve pain and improve the function of human body. As a therapeutic method, acupuncture is safe, effective and is often successfully used as an alternative to medications and some other therapeutic procedures, even surgery. How does acupuncture work?Acupuncture treatment is based on the traditional Chinese medical theory. One of the fundamental concepts in the traditional Chinese medical theory is "Qi", the life force which flows through the channels (also know as energy pathway or meridians) of the body. These channels link every part of body (from internal organs to surface and from limbs to head) as a whole functional unit. The life force has two polarities, Yin and Yang and disease is viewed as a disruption in the balance of these polarities. Treatment seeks to restore balance by removing obstructions and reestablishing the free flow of the vital energy through the system. So the treatment principle is the regulation of the whole body's function but not treating the head for head pain and the feet for feet pain. What is the indication for acupuncture?Clinical practice has indicated that acupuncture has been widely used in dealing with diseases and functional abnormalities in the central and peripheral nervous system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, digestive system and immunity system, such as pain management, stress, headache, migraine, trigeminal neuralgia, arthritis, tendinitis insomnia and etc. In December, 1979 World Health Organization (WHO) made a decision to apply acupuncture in the treatment of 43 kinds of diseases. How can acupuncture relieve pain? One of the most widely used indications is the relief of pain by acupuncture. How could a needle in the hand or foot possibly relieve headache? Many people and physicians were puzzled and skeptical. Scientific research has proved that acupuncture can stimulate the small diameter nerves in muscles to send impulse to the spinal cord and then three centers-- spinal, midbrain and pituitary are activated to release transmitter chemicals, such as endorphins and monoamines, which block pain messages.Does acupuncture hurt? The acupuncture needles are very fine and insertion typically feels no worse than a little pinch followed by sensations: numbness, warmth, tingling or heaviness, which are necessary for the acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture is safe and it has fewer side effects than medications. |
